But Bernd is also thinking further ahead. Seeing AI as part of a longer technology evolution – artificial intelligence’ s journey is one that will be followed by advances in robotics and, eventually, quantum computing – using the principles of quantum mechanics to perform calculations far beyond the reach of conventional computers.
“ AI is one step, but a significant one, in the technology lifecycle,” he says.
“ Based on AI, robotics will be the next big evolution, then quantum computing – and all of these technologies accumulate the possibilities of what you can achieve. If you look longer term, the possibilities are almost endless. That’ s exactly why it is so important, right now in the short term, to make the right choices.”
Whatever technology comes and goes, Bernd is steadfast on one thing – the goal, as ever, stays fixed on the patient.“ The greatest long-term value will be when as many patients as possible can be treated for as many diseases as possible,” Bernd says.“ AI has the potential to support more efficient development timelines, enhance clinical operations and production processes, which ultimately help us improve and extend lives.”
