“ A strategy is only as good as the operating model beneath it,” says Bournemouth University’ s Chief Operating Officer Gerry Greyling.“ BU2035 sets a clear direction, but pillars are delivered across the institution – not by departments in isolation. So our first task is to design an operating model where collaboration is the default.”
For Gerry, this means organising around outcomes rather than historic functions. For example, the student journey from enquiry to alumnus, the research lifecycle and the path from a capital decision to a building in use.
“ When you structure around those end-to-end value streams instead of departmental boxes, silos dissolve naturally because no single team owns an outcome that runs across several of them. Clear accountability still matters; the aim is to connect responsibility, not blur it.”
