P-8A Poseidon: The RAF ' s submarine hunter
– is all part of what we’ re trying to achieve,” explains Toby Milwright, Poseidon Air ISR LDO Manager.“ It’ s about storing the data locally – the bulk data that comes off the jet. The best thing to do rather than breaking the networks and sending lots of data is processing it locally, where you can look after it.
“ Tagging the data and curating it is best done by people who understand how the data was produced – in other words, those who collected it,” he says.“ We want the operations teams to do that job locally here at Lossiemouth.”
By enabling analysts to quickly access and process the most relevant data, the system has increased the P-8 force’ s operational efficiency, as Piero explains:“ NetApp’ s work with the RAF has improved the P-8 operational efficiency through better data management. This has resulted in faster turnaround time, more accurate intelligence analysis, and ultimately more effective maritime reconnaissance operations.”
Allied cooperation While the UK operates nine P-8 aircraft, the power of the system is multiplied through cooperation with allies. Norway, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia all operate the same aircraft, with Germany and Canada soon to join.
