As a result, the uptake of agentic AI – where autonomous bots handle complex workflows – may slow down. Gartner projects that 40 % of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by 2027 as technical costs and agent washing – the rebranding of simple bots as advanced AI – outpace actual benefits.
McKinsey & Company’ s Agents, Robots and Us report supports this, estimating that while 30-50 % of work activities could be automated, the immediate result is often fast but poor-quality output as remaining staff struggle to manage new tools.
Forrester’ s Predictions 2026 report adds a note of caution, predicting that roughly half of AI-attributed layoffs may eventually be reversed as companies realise the limitations of pure automation and are forced to rehire for roles requiring humanin-the-loop oversight.
