One of the pioneers of analytics software , SAS grew out of a project

at North Carolina State University . The software from which the company derives its name , SAS ( originally standing for Statistical Analysis System ) has been continually updated since its original development at the university in the 1960s . The private company emphasises the platform nature of its product offering , with capabilities for data mining , forecasting and optimisation .
