“ So, when discussing use cases with customers, you have to really look at what to expect in terms of dexterity and what a robot can actually achieve. And if you want a robot to be very precise, you’ re going to suffer from the second problem with robots, which is speed.
“ The speed of action is not yet on par with a human. I would say robots work at about 25 % the speed of a human. So if you put a human and a robot doing the exact same thing and you expect the robot to perform as well, you’ re going to be disappointed. The only thing you can bet on is that the iron thing never gets tired so can work on and on, providing obvious reliability wins.”
When it comes to fleet management, scale introduces an entirely new layer of difficulty.
“ Unless you are in an environment where you only have one robot doing one task, most of the time you will want to have several robots in a single environment, where they are very likely to be working with or on behalf of people,” Pascal says.
“ The overall orchestration of these robots is more complex than just having one robot walking, dancing and doing fancy things. Some companies may even want to begin with one, then go to three, then expand to 300, which is a really complex thing.”
