“ First of all, and for very good reasons, there is always some fear when we start a project about those robots – what they’ re going to do and whether they will take someone’ s job,” Pascal says.“ To some extent, those are fair questions. From the very beginning of any project, it is crucial to understand that the key success factor will not be technology; it’ s going to be organisation and trust.
“ Organisation means asking why you need those robots, what their role is, how you define it, and how you organise the coexistence between humans and robots on the shop floor or in the warehouse.
“ Trust is built very easily if you’ ve done the right thing regarding the machine’ s mission – to what extent is it really giving help or removing pain? Humans need to spend time coexisting with the machine and learning its limitations.
“ The last element we need to solve is managing safety at scale. Managing one or three robots is easy because you know they are there, but when you get to 100 robots, managing overall safety between humans and machines becomes far more complex.”
With the technology evolving rapidly, the window to prepare workplaces for high-density automation is already opening.
“ It’ s the right time to start now, but nobody is really late. Don’ t wait too long, because there is a learning curve and building that trust takes time. If you’ re serious about robotics, you had better start now so you build organisational understanding and trust.”
