FROM EARTH ORBIT TO LUNAR TOUCHDOWN
NASA’ s Artemis campaign establishes a step-by-step roadmap for sustained deep-space exploration:
Artemis I( 2022): Uncrewed test flight validating the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft on a 1.4-million-mile lunar orbit.
Artemis II( 2026): First crewed test flight, carrying four astronauts on a 10-day flyby around the Moon.
Artemis III( 2027): LEO operational test validating multi-vehicle docking, life support and suit integration with commercial lander pathfinders.
Artemis IV( 2028): Returns humans to the lunar surface at the Moon’ s South Pole, laying the foundation for long-term lunar presence and eventual missions to Mars.
Behind NASA’ s ambitious return to the Moon is an industrial coalition supported by an overarching network of approximately 3,000 suppliers and contractors across the US and Europe. Rather than attempting to catalogue thousands of technology vendors, the report examines three distinct partners – Honeywell Aerospace, Amazon Web Services( AWS) and Axiom Space – to illustrate how modern deep-space exploration relies on a balance of onboard avionics, cloud infrastructure and human-wearable systems.
Honeywell Aerospace represents the embedded flight architecture, supplying 19 critical technologies across the Orion capsule and Space Launch System rocket. Its central Vehicle Management Computer( VMC), flight software and specialised inertial measurement units serve as the spacecraft’ s digital backbone, enabling autonomous navigation when traditional GPS signals fade in deep space.
