CLOUD COMPUTING
We make extensive use of Satellite to manage and update our operating systems, ensuring they remain consistent and secure. Ansible is used to a lesser extent to automate some routine system administration tasks.
Red Hat OpenShift facilitates containerisation and modernisation of applications, improving agility.
Meanwhile, Red Hat Satellite ensures consistent OS management, while Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform automates various deployment and management tasks. Together, these technologies enhance system resilience, security and performance.
We adapted OpenShift as a container platform from the early days of the n-Connect programme, where we started to modernise and containerise some of our NM front-end systems. OpenShift is still being used for this function. More importantly, OpenShift is a core building block of our Digital Platform.
Q. WITH EUROPEAN AIR TRAFFIC PROJECTED TO HIT 12.4 MILLION ANNUAL FLIGHTS BY 2031, DEMAND FLUCTUATIONS HAPPEN IN REAL TIME. HOW DOES THIS NEW OPEN HYBRID CLOUD PLATFORM ALLOW YOU TO DYNAMICALLY SCALE OPERATIONS BETWEEN YOUR ON-PREMISES DATA CENTRES AND REGIONAL SOVEREIGN CLOUDS DURING PEAK TRAFFIC SURGES?
ยป Scaling up was not possible in the existing EUROCONTROL data centres due to limitations in physical space and cooling capacity in the data centre aisles. We analysed the cost of building an additional data centre but, when we factored in the need to overscale from day one, the time of delivery and costs of hardware, we decided cloud-first would be the best option for ensuring that we would deliver the project on time and on budget.
Additional considerations for moving to the cloud include maintenance costs of on-premises data centres, which are increasingly financially unsustainable, consuming a significant part of our technology budget merely to maintain status quo operations while leaving minimal resources for innovation or improvement.
