When Orion transmitted 4K video via laser to Australia’ s Mount Stromlo Observatory, AWS provided the 15,000-kilometer terrestrial fibre link connecting Australia to New Mexico in milliseconds.
Integrated with AWS Elemental services, the network powered live broadcasts across NASA +, Prime Video and YouTube to over 25 million viewers.“ For the first time in more than 50 years, astronauts travelled beyond LEO,” says Matt Garman, CEO of AWS.“ NASA’ s flight sciences team used Amazon EC2 in AWS GovCloud as a primary compute platform for trajectory analysis, the precision calculations that ensure the spacecraft stays on its exact path around the Moon and back, especially in the critical first 48 hours after launch.
“ And the incredible 4K images and video from Orion were transmitted by NASA’ s Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System over the AWS global network.”
For Artemis III, AWS’ s role expands to multi-spacecraft operations, including multi-vehicle trajectory modelling. AWS will power NASA’ s Mission Cloud Platform to model complex orbital mechanics, rendezvous trajectories and real-time telemetry across Orion and commercial landing craft.
Plus, flight dynamics teams will use expanded high-performance cloud clusters to run concurrent, real-time mission simulations.
