While Axiom Space did not supply flight hardware for the Artemis II crewed lunar flyby, which relied on NASA’ s Orion Launch and Entry Suits, the company actively supported the mission timeline on the ground.
During this period, Axiom conducted extensive human-in-the-loop pressurised simulations and neutral buoyancy testing to refine suit ergonomics, life-support architecture and operational procedures for future crewed extravehicular activities.
For Artemis III, Axiom Space provides the key wearable technology bridging human crews with deep-space hardware: the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit( AxEMU).
As Artemis III serves as a critical LEO demonstration flight, Axiom’ s primary objective is validating how the AxEMU interacts directly with spacecraft systems. During the orbital mission, astronauts will test suit interfaces, docking mobility and pressurised operations across Orion and commercial lander pathfinders like SpaceX’ s Starship and Blue Origin’ s lander test vehicle.
Developed in partnership with luxury fashion house Prada for highperformance outer-layer materials, the AxEMU is designed to replace aging Apollo-era technology. It incorporates carbon-composite joints and customtailored sizing for flexibility; onboard
diagnostics, HD video streams and integrated heads-up displays; and up to eight hours of continuous operational capability, backed by regenerable carbon-dioxide scrubbing and extreme thermal protection.
Through Artemis III, Axiom Space ensures the next generation of spacefarers is equipped with the physical protection required for long-duration orbital work and eventual lunar surface exploration.
